MaxwellEdison is a resource for when things go wrong in medical practice. Founded many years ago by me, Thomas Woodcock MB.BS (London) M.Phil (Glasgow), MaxwellEdison is now based in Stockbridge, Hampshire, UK and offers education, support and advice on many aspects of medical law and ethics at home and abroad.

  • I was the first Consultant to be appointed to Intensive Care Medicine in Southampton (1987), and gave up my License to Practice in 2015; more than 27 years of research, clinical, ethical and medicolegal experience in a National Health Service Teaching Hospital.
  • An innovator in Education, creating UK’s first Higher Professional Training program in ICM and the Southampton Simulator Training course at Bristol Simulation Centre.
  • Teaching ethics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, University of Southampton, since 1990.
  • Ethics education projects for the Society of Critical Care Medicine (FCCS), European Society of Intensive Medicine (PACT), Intensive Care Society (JICS), and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Annals).
  • An innovator in Clinical Practice, for example continuous haemofiltration and extracorporeal gas exchange technologies.
  • An NHS Research Ethics expert with Good Clinical Practice training.
  • Founder of the Clinical Ethics Group at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2002 and still a Member.
  • Masters Degree in Medical Law M.Phil (Glasg) 2002, Dissertation “Health Care Law and Health Care Ethics”

  • Lecturer and Advisory Appointments representative to the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
  • Invited to advise and lecture Australians Donate (Organ Transplantation) initiative Sydney, 2004.

  • NHS National Clinical Excellence Award Holder from 2005 to 2015.

  • Elected Council Member the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland 2011-2015.
